The Copsma Family of Friesland
I have begun the undertaking of writing a book, one that explores a particularly interesting family in the world of early modern Friesland. The Copsma Family of Friesland analyzes how historical events in the Netherlands affected a family of politically influential freeholders in Friesland from the 15th to the 18th centuries. Starting as rich landowners, the Copsmas eventually moved their way up to the highest echelons of local governance. However, this powerful standing would not last forever, as by the 18th century members of the Copsma family would be found dying penniless in poorhouses.
The book is in the early stages of development as I gather further research and develop the first draft of the manuscript. What has been revealed thus far is incredibly interesting and provides a unique lens through which to view wider historical trends that affected Friesland. I look forward to sharing the progress on this work as I discover even more intriguing aspects of the family’s history.
